WHAT MATTERS

On the Road of Life, we board trains
which take us on various tracks
towards our coveted destinations. These
trains can take the form of a career,
a commitment to a goal, a relationship,
a marriage, a child.

When these trains take on a frenetic
pace, and the world outside the window
becomes a dizzying blur, we risk forgetting
what truly makes life meaningful and enriching.

For instance, it doesn't matter what you
do for a living. What matters is whether
you know what you have a passion for doing,
and if you have the courage to pursue it.

It doesn't matter how old you are. What
matters is whether you will risk
appearing the fool for love, or in
the pursuit of knowledge or a dream.

It doesn't matter how much emotional
hurt you've suffered. What matters is
whether you've learnt to allow sorrow
to open your heart and mind, or if
you've become shriveled and bitter.
For emotional pain may be unavoidable,
but it is by no  eans indomitable.
If we let the fear of emotional pain
build walls around our heart, we shut
all future happiness out.

It doesn't matter if you say and do
what you should or ought to. What matters
is if you can touch the nucleus of your
emotional state in stillness ? be it joy
or pain ? and let it enlighten your soul.
Whether you can allow simple joys to
permeate every fibre of your being and
spirit you into the clouds, without fear
of losing your footing.

It doesn't matter how highly educated
you are, what make of car you drive,
where you live, how much money you have,
and how high you are on the corporate
ladder. What matters is what sustains
you from the inside when all else fades
away. Whether you can truly be who you
are, and feel the existence of a higher
consciousness in the quiet moments of self-communion.

It doesn't matter if you can understand
and accept the unsightly realities
of life. What matters is if you have
the courage to see beauty in life even
when it's not pretty everyday; whether
you can both savour the tingling
warmth of the noonday sun on your
skin and the exquisite chill of the early
morning, or in the words of Oscar Wilde,
whether you can "see the world in
all its tainted glory and still love it".

So, as we speed along in the trains on
the railway of Life, let us not
forget what truly makes this Life
special and worth living.
