Love's Philosophy

The fountains mingle with the river,

And the rivers with the ocean;

The winds of heaven mix forever,

With a sweet emotion;

Nothing in the world is single;

All things by a law divine

In one another's being mingle:-

Why not I with thine?

See ! The mountains kiss high heaven,

And the waves clasp one another;

No sister flower would be forgiven

If it disdained its brother;

And the sunlight clasps the earth,

And the moonbeams kiss the sky:-

What are all these kissings worth,

If thou kiss not me?

~ Percy Bysshe Shelley ~

Thou Hast Wounded The Spirit That Loved Thee

Thou hast wounded the spirit that loved thee,

And cherished thing image for years,

Thou hast taught me at last to forget thee,

In secret, in silence, and tears,

As a young bird when left by its mother,

Its earliest pinions to try,

Round the nest will still lingering hover,

Ere its trembling wings to try.

Thus we're taught in this cold world to smother

Each feeling that once was so dear;

Like that young bird I'll seek to discover

A home of affection elsewhere.

Though this heart may still cling to thee fondly

And dream of sweet memories past,

Yet hope, like the rainbow of summer,

Gives a promise of Lethe at last.

Like the sunbeams that play on the ocean,

In tremulous touches of light,

Is the heart in its early emotion,

Illumined with versions as bright.

Yet ofttimes beneath the waves swelling,

A tempest will suddenly come,

All rudely and wildly dispelling

The love of the happiest home.

Vases

Two vases stood on the Shelf of Life

As Love came by to look,

One was of priceless cloisnne,

The other of solid common clay.

Which do you think Love took?

He took them both from the Shelf of Life,

He took them both with a smile;

He clasped them both with his finger tips,

And touched them both with caressing lips,

And held them both for awhile.

From tired hands Love let them fall,

And never a word was spoken.

One was of priceless cloisonne,

The other of solid common clay.

Which do you think was broken?
